Unsecured Business Loan Balance Transfer: Check Whether the Savings Cover the Costs

A lower EMI does not always mean a cheaper loan. Compare the remaining cost of the old loan with the full proposed repayment, then subtract foreclosure charges, processing fees, taxes and other switching costs.

Unsecured means no asset is pledged as collateral. Repayment and lender checks still apply.

What a business-loan balance transfer changes

A balance transfer is a new loan used to close the outstanding balance of an existing loan. You then repay the new lender under a new agreement. Approval is not automatic, and the new lender may change the rate, EMI, tenure, fees, guarantee terms or amount after its checks.

Ask both lenders for written figures with the same calculation date.

COMPARE LIKE FOR LIKE

Use two totals and one break-even test

Old-loan remaining cost: all EMIs still due under the current schedule.

Transfer cost: all EMIs due under the proposed schedule plus every switching cost not already included.

Net transfer benefit = old-loan remaining cost − new-loan remaining cost − switching costs.

Break-even months = total switching costs ÷ monthly EMI reduction. If the new tenure changes, compare total repayment too.

CHECKED ILLUSTRATION

A lower EMI that still costs more

Assume ₹10,00,000 outstanding with 24 months left. At a hypothetical 18% reducing rate, the EMI is about ₹49,924 and the total of 24 EMIs is about ₹11,98,178. At 14%, the EMI is about ₹48,013 and the total is about ₹11,52,309.

The repayment reduction is about ₹45,869. If foreclosure, processing, tax and other disclosed switching costs total ₹59,000, the transfer costs about ₹13,131 more. Recovering the ₹59,000 through the ₹1,911 monthly EMI reduction takes about 31 months—longer than the 24 months left. Rounded planning example only; not an offer.

COST LEDGER

List every switching cost

  • Old lender’s foreclosure or prepayment amount
  • Interest due to the exact settlement date
  • New processing fee and applicable tax
  • Stamp, mandate or documentation cost where applicable
  • Insurance, guarantee or third-party cost where applicable
  • Any charge linked to a top-up or changed facility

Some costs may be deducted from the new principal. Check usable cash with the net disbursal guide.

PREPAYMENT TERMS

Check the old loan before assuming a saving

RBI’s 2025 prepayment directions apply to covered loans sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026. The treatment of a floating-rate business-purpose loan depends on the borrower category, lender category, amount and other conditions. Fixed-rate loans and cases outside the covered conditions do not automatically become charge-free.

Use the account-specific foreclosure statement. Read the business-loan foreclosure and part-payment guide for the detailed rule framework.

DOCUMENT CHECK

Compare the KFS and both schedules

For covered retail and MSME term loans, the Key Facts Statement (KFS) summarises important facts. Annual percentage rate (APR) is an annual cost measure that includes interest and applicable charges covered by the framework.

Check principal, net disbursal, fixed or floating rate, APR, fees, EMI count, first due date, repayment schedule, new prepayment terms and guarantee obligations. Read the KFS with the sanction letter and complete agreement.

SEPARATE NEW DEBT

Do not let a top-up hide the comparison

If the new principal is larger than the old outstanding balance, separate the extra borrowing. Compare the same outstanding amount first. Then calculate the cash and repayment effect of the additional amount.

A lower EMI can come from a longer tenure. Compare the number of payments and total repayment, not only the monthly amount.

PREPARE THE FILE

Documents to collect

  • Old sanction letter and agreement
  • Latest outstanding or foreclosure statement
  • Repayment schedule and recent loan statement
  • Proof of regular repayments
  • Requested bank statements, tax returns, financial statements and GST returns
  • Business registration and identity records
  • Proposed KFS, sanction letter and schedule

Exact requirements vary. Use the unsecured business-loan documents checklist.

SEVEN STEPS

A practical transfer check

  1. Ask the old lender for a dated settlement figure.
  2. Ask whether it can offer a written rate or tenure change.
  3. Get the proposed lender’s written KFS and schedule.
  4. Keep the remaining tenure the same for the first comparison.
  5. Add every switching cost and net-disbursal deduction.
  6. Test the EMI against a weak cash-flow month.
  7. Confirm closure payment, disbursal route and document handover.

Use the business-loan EMI calculator for a planning estimate. The lender’s written schedule controls the real repayment.

DECISION GATE

When a transfer may not help

It may not help when little tenure remains, the rate difference is small, fees absorb the saving, the new tenure increases total repayment, a top-up creates unnecessary debt, or cash flow cannot support the revised payment.

It may be worth comparing when a meaningful tenure remains, full cost is lower after fees, the payment fits cash flow and the terms are clear. Approval still depends on the lender.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can I move an unsecured business loan to another lender?
Possibly, if the new lender offers a suitable facility and approves the business and applicant.

Is a lower EMI proof that the transfer is cheaper?
No. A longer tenure can lower EMI while increasing total repayment.

Should I close the old loan before the new loan is ready?
Do not assume the timing. Confirm approval, disbursal and settlement steps in writing.

What should I keep after closure?
Keep the settlement payment, closure or no-dues record, updated account status and both lenders’ correspondence.

Never post business bank statements, account details, passwords or one-time passwords in public comments.
