Need a personal loan? Understand what fits your salary before you apply.

A regular salary helps you plan repayments, but salary alone does not decide loan approval or a comfortable EMI. Your expenses, existing loans, credit history and the lender's rules also matter.

This guide helps you answer four questions: Can I qualify? Can I afford the EMI? What will the loan really cost? What should I do next? Start with the section that matches your situation, then keep the checklist handy when comparing an offer.

01 / THE GUIDE

Start with your situation

  • Your first personal loan: work out the amount you actually need, your monthly repayment budget and the documents you can provide.
  • You already pay EMIs: include every current repayment before adding a new one. A second loan needs its own repayment plan.
  • You have an offer: compare the amount you will receive, APR, fees and total repayment before accepting it.
  • An application was rejected: review the reason, documents and credit report before sending another application.

Write down the purpose and essential amount first. A smaller borrowing requirement can make the monthly commitment easier to manage. If the expense can wait, compare borrowing now with saving towards it.

02 / THE GUIDE

What lenders assess for a salaried personal loan

ICICI Bank's salaried loan guidance identifies income, employer category, credit score and repayment capacity as eligibility factors. Each lender applies its own policy, so there is no single salary or score that guarantees approval everywhere.

  • Income: your take-home pay, salary credits and how much of your earnings is regular.
  • Employment: your employer and work history, including time in the present role.
  • Credit profile: repayment history, existing balances and recent credit enquiries.
  • Current obligations: existing loan EMIs and other credit commitments.
  • Product rules: the lender's age, location, employer and documentation criteria.

Before applying, ask whether the product fits your current employment situation and which salary figure the lender uses. Keep basic details consistent across the application and documents. An initial eligibility indication is useful for shortlisting; final approval, amount and terms remain subject to the lender's assessment.

03 / THE GUIDE

Work out an EMI your monthly budget can carry

Start with: take-home salary − essential expenses − existing repayments − savings and emergency buffer = unallocated monthly room.

This is a household planning exercise, not a lender's eligibility formula. Use the money that reaches your account after deductions. Include rent, food, travel, bills, dependants and regular medical costs. Set aside a monthly share for annual expenses such as school fees or insurance.

Count all repayments, including card instalments and other credit payments. Avoid counting the same purchase twice if it is already included in your expenses. Keep a buffer for unexpected expenses and the savings you need to maintain. Then choose a proposed EMI below the remaining room, leaving breathing space.

Test the budget in a difficult month: a higher bill, a delayed incentive or a family expense. If the EMI depends on a bonus arriving every time, reduce the amount or reconsider the timing.

An EMI calculator estimates repayment using an amount, interest rate and tenure. Replace assumptions with the lender's actual offer before deciding.

Illustrative budgets for ₹25,000, ₹40,000 and ₹60,000 salaries

These invented budgets illustrate the calculation. They are not eligibility limits, recommended EMIs or promised loan amounts. Replace every expense with your own figure.

₹25,000 / month

Essentials: ₹15,000
Existing repayments: ₹2,000
Savings & buffer: ₹4,000

₹4,000
Unallocated monthly room

₹40,000 / month

Essentials: ₹22,000
Existing repayments: ₹5,000
Savings & buffer: ₹6,000

₹7,000
Unallocated monthly room

₹60,000 / month

Essentials: ₹30,000
Existing repayments: ₹8,000
Savings & buffer: ₹10,000

₹12,000
Unallocated monthly room

In the ₹40,000 example, using all ₹7,000 for a new EMI would remove the remaining flexibility. Someone with the same salary but higher rent or dependant costs may have much less room. Salary alone cannot tell you how much to borrow.

05 / THE GUIDE

Check your credit report before another application

Read the report as well as the score. Review accounts you recognise, outstanding balances, repayment records, closed-account status and recent enquiries. Keep payment or closure records if an entry needs checking.

CIBIL explains that applying to several lenders in a short period can create multiple hard enquiries and repeated enquiries may affect your score. Shortlist suitable products before submitting applications, and ask whether an eligibility check will involve a lender credit enquiry.

Checking your own CIBIL Score does not reduce it, according to CIBIL's consumer brochure. If an account, enquiry or personal detail appears incorrect, contact the reporting lender or raise a dispute through CIBIL's official process. CIBIL needs the concerned credit institution's authorisation to change reported data; see its dispute guidance.

Keep current repayments on time. Correcting an error or improving repayment habits does not create an immediate approval guarantee.

06 / THE GUIDE

Prepare your documents without guessing the required period

Ask for the chosen lender's current checklist. Common items include accepted identity and address proof, PAN details where required, salary slips, salary-credit bank statements and employment details. Some applications may request an employee ID, photograph, Form 16 or additional verification.

Document periods vary. At the time of review, ICICI Bank's documentation page lists three months of salary-credit bank statements and one month's salary slip. HDFC Bank's income-proof FAQ refers to the latest three salary slips. These are lender examples, not a universal checklist.

  • Download complete, legible documents from their original source.
  • Check that your name, salary credits and employment details match the application.
  • Explain genuine differences, such as a recent address or employer change.
  • Ask which secure channel to use before sharing sensitive records.

If something is missing, request it from payroll or ask the lender about accepted alternatives. Keep the documents accurate and unedited.

07 / THE GUIDE

Compare the full loan offer, not only the EMI

Ask for the Key Facts Statement (KFS) before accepting the loan. It gives the key terms in a standard format. Annual Percentage Rate (APR) expresses the annual borrowing cost, including interest and associated charges. RBI's KFS rules require APR and a repayment schedule; charges the lender recovers for third-party services, such as insurance, are included and separately disclosed.

Write these details side by side for every offer:

  • Loan amount and net amount received: what is financed, what is deducted and what reaches your account.
  • APR and interest rate: use the KFS to understand the cost beyond the advertised rate.
  • EMI, tenure and repayment total: monthly instalment, number of months and the total scheduled repayments.
  • Other charges: processing fees, applicable taxes, late-payment or failed-payment charges and cancellation terms.
  • Early repayment: ask about part-payment and full-closure conditions and any charges that apply to your loan.
  • Add-ons: ask which services are optional, their separate price and whether they are deducted or financed.

For a simple illustration, a ₹2,00,000 financed loan with ₹5,000 deducted upfront puts ₹1,95,000 in your account. Repayment is based on the contracted loan, so confirm that the net proceeds meet your need.

For a fixed rate and amount, a longer tenure usually lowers EMI but raises total interest, as ICICI Bank's calculator FAQs explain. Compare offers using the same amount and tenure where possible. Check the repayment schedule rather than choosing the smallest EMI alone.

Use the Offer Comparison Sheet

08 / THE GUIDE

Recently changed jobs, on probation or already paying loans?

  • Recent job change: prepare previous and current employment records and salary credits. Ask whether the lender needs a minimum period with your new employer.
  • Probation: check the lender's policy before applying. An offer letter does not by itself establish eligibility.
  • Incentives or variable pay: separate dependable fixed pay from variable earnings in your budget. Ask how the lender assesses incentives rather than assuming your best month will count.
  • Existing loans: list balances and EMIs. If considering consolidation, compare the new total cost, fees and closure costs with continuing the current loans. A lower EMI can come from a longer repayment period.
  • Missing salary slips: request copies from payroll and ask which alternative income evidence the lender accepts. Bank credits alone may not meet every product's requirements.

Describe your situation accurately at the start. This helps you identify a suitable next step and reduces avoidable document follow-ups. Where a lender's criteria do not fit, changing the amount may not solve the underlying issue.

09 / THE GUIDE

Apply in a clear sequence, and review a rejection before retrying

  1. Define the need: choose the essential amount and a repayment budget.
  2. Review readiness: check employment fit, existing obligations, documents and credit report.
  3. Shortlist: understand the lender's criteria and whether the next step creates a credit enquiry.
  4. Submit accurately: review details and permissions before providing the requested documents.
  5. Read the offer: confirm the KFS, net disbursal, EMI, charges and repayment conditions before accepting.
  6. Plan repayment: note the first due date and keep enough funds in the repayment account.
Personal loan rejected? Check these five things before you reapply. Start with the reason, not another application. An unsecured personal loan does not require an asset pledged as collateral, but repayment obligations and lender checks still apply.
  1. Ask for the reason. Save the rejection message and application reference. Ask the lender whether the issue relates to your credit record, income, existing debt, employment, documents or another eligibility condition. Ask what you should check or correct.
  2. Review your credit report. Look for unfamiliar accounts or enquiries, wrong personal details, repayment errors and incorrect balances. Checking your own CIBIL score does not affect it; a lender's credit enquiry can. If information is wrong, contact the reporting lender and use the bureau's official dispute process. Keep evidence and complaint references. CIBIL needs confirmation from the relevant credit institution to change lender-supplied data. A submitted dispute is not proof that a correction is complete.
  3. Check repayment room. List take-home income, essential expenses, existing monthly instalments and irregular costs before adding a new EMI. Use the EMI calculator for an estimate, then check the lender's actual repayment schedule. A calculator does not decide eligibility.
  4. Fix errors or missing details. Compare the application with your income and employment records. Ask which identity, address, salary and banking documents the lender needs. Explain changes honestly. Do not hide debt, inflate income or alter a document. Correct paperwork does not guarantee that you meet other conditions.
  5. Check the reapplication policy. Ask whether the existing application can be reviewed, whether a waiting period applies, what has changed and whether the next step creates another credit enquiry. Use the actual lender's policy; do not assume a universal waiting period. Many applications in a short time can matter, and a smaller request or corrected report does not guarantee approval.
Illustration only: Monthly take-home pay of ₹60,000, essential expenses of ₹32,000 and existing EMIs of ₹12,000 leave ₹16,000 before a new loan. A proposed EMI of ₹10,000 would leave ₹6,000 for irregular costs and emergencies. These hypothetical numbers explain household budgeting, not a lender eligibility formula, offer or recommended loan amount.

Keep a short record of the reason given, action taken, evidence saved and any unresolved issue. If you later receive an offer, compare its full cost and repayment terms before accepting it.

Keep your checklist, then request guidance when you are ready

Keep three things ready: your document checklist, a salary-to-EMI budget and a sheet comparing loan offers. Together, they help you ask useful questions and make a decision with the numbers in front of you.

If you would like help with your next step, request personal loan guidance from Quick Disburse and share your required amount and contact details through the enquiry form. Explain any existing EMIs, recent job change or document gap during the discussion.

Questions salaried borrowers ask

How much personal loan can I get on my salary?

Salary alone cannot determine a loan amount. A lender also considers your credit profile, employer, existing obligations and its product rules. First calculate a repayment budget, then ask for an assessment. The salary examples in this guide are household budgets, not loan eligibility figures.

Can I get a personal loan with a ₹25,000 monthly salary?

Check the chosen lender's current income and other eligibility criteria. Requirements vary, and matching a salary condition does not guarantee approval. Use your actual take-home pay, expenses and existing repayments to decide whether a proposed EMI would be manageable.

Can I apply if I already have a personal loan or other EMIs?

Existing debt will be relevant to the lender's assessment and your repayment budget. List every EMI and other credit commitment before considering another loan. If consolidating debt, compare the full new cost and existing-loan closure terms, not only the new monthly instalment.

What CIBIL score guarantees personal loan approval?

No score guarantees approval. Credit history is one part of the lender's assessment. Review the report for repayment entries, balances, unfamiliar accounts and enquiries, then check the selected product's requirements. CIBIL reports credit information; the lender makes the lending decision.

Will checking my own CIBIL Score lower it?

CIBIL says checking your own score does not reduce it. A lender enquiry connected with an application is different. Before using an eligibility tool or applying, ask what kind of credit check it involves and review the permissions you give.

Can I apply during probation or after changing jobs?

Check the lender's employment policy before submitting an application. It may require particular employment evidence or time in the current role. Prepare accurate previous and current job records and salary credits. Probation or a new job should be explained at the start.

Can I get a personal loan without salary slips?

Accepted income evidence depends on the lender and application route. Request missing slips from payroll, then ask whether the lender accepts an alternative for your situation. A bank statement or offer letter is not automatically a substitute for every product.

What should I do if my personal loan application is rejected?

Ask the lender for the reason or clarification available. Check your credit report, repayment room and document accuracy. Confirm the lender’s reapplication policy before another formal application. Use the five-check rejection checklist above; correcting an issue does not guarantee approval.

Does a lower EMI mean a cheaper personal loan?

A lower EMI may result from a longer tenure, which can increase total interest for the same amount and rate. Compare APR, net proceeds, fees, tenure and total scheduled repayment in the KFS and offer documents before choosing.
