Can You Cancel a Personal Loan? Checks Before and After Disbursement
You may be able to stop or exit a personal loan, but the process changes with the stage. Before disbursement, ask the lender to stop the application immediately. After a qualifying digital loan is disbursed, check the Key Facts Statement (KFS) for the cooling-off period and exit route. After that period, the lender may treat your request as foreclosure, not cancellation.
Do not assume that ignoring the money, stopping an EMI mandate or returning only the amount credited to your bank will close the loan. Ask for the exact payable amount and written closure confirmation from the lender.
An unsecured personal loan means you do not pledge an asset as collateral. You still have a repayment duty, and the lender still checks your income, existing debt, credit history and other eligibility factors.
Start with the stage of your loan
- Application submitted, not accepted: Ask the lender to withdraw or close the application.
Confirm in writing: Application status, document handling and whether any fee was already incurred. - Sanctioned or accepted, not disbursed: Tell the lender immediately not to release funds.
Confirm in writing: Whether disbursement has been stopped, any cancellation charge and the final application status. - Digital loan disbursed, still inside the disclosed cooling-off period: Use the lender's stated exit process and request the exact amount payable.
Confirm in writing: Principal, proportionate APR, any disclosed processing fee, payment route and closure timeline. - Cooling-off period over, or the route does not qualify: Ask whether the request will be handled as foreclosure or another closure process.
Confirm in writing: Outstanding principal, interest to the payment date, charges, taxes, NACH status and closure documents.
The table is a decision guide, not a promise that every lender uses the same process. Your KFS, sanction letter, loan agreement and current lender policy control the actual steps.
Before approval or acceptance
If you have only submitted an application, contact the lender through an official channel as soon as you change your mind. Ask the lender to record that you want to withdraw.
Keep the application number, date, time, email or service-request number. Ask whether the lender has already completed a credit enquiry or charged a fee. Withdrawing the application does not automatically erase a valid credit enquiry that has already been made.
Do not send more documents or money to an individual agent after you have asked to stop. Use the lender's official website, app, branch or customer-care route.
After sanction but before disbursement
A sanction means the lender has approved an amount subject to its terms. It does not always mean the money has already been sent.
Tell the lender immediately that you do not want disbursement. Use clear words: “Please stop disbursement and confirm cancellation of this application in writing.” Ask whether any document has already been executed and whether any charge applies.
Check your bank account as well as the lender's status. A message saying “approved” is different from proof that the loan was not disbursed. If the credit has already reached your account, move to the post-disbursement checks.
After disbursement: check whether it is a digital loan
RBI rules for digital lending give a borrower an initial cooling-off period. During the applicable period, the borrower can exit by paying the principal and proportionate annual percentage rate, or APR, without a penalty. APR is the yearly cost measure that combines interest with applicable charges. The lender sets the period under its policy, subject to the regulatory minimum that applies to it.
The lender may retain a reasonable one-time processing fee if that was disclosed upfront in the KFS. This is why “no penalty” does not always mean “every rupee of every fee is refunded.”
Read the KFS and loan agreement for:
- the cooling-off or look-up period;
- the date from which it starts;
- the exact exit request channel;
- the amount and payment method;
- any processing fee that may be retained;
- when the lender will stop the repayment mandate; and
- which closure document you will receive.
Do not use a lender-specific period as a market-wide rule. For example, one bank currently states a 15-day free-look period for its personal loans, while RBI's current consolidated bank directions set a regulatory floor and allow the lender's credit policy to determine the actual period.
Why returning the net credit may not be enough
The amount credited to your bank can be lower than the sanctioned principal when disclosed fees and taxes are deducted.
Consider a labelled illustration:
- Sanctioned principal: ₹5,00,000
- Processing fee: ₹10,000
- Tax on that fee, assuming 18% for this example: ₹1,800
- Net amount credited: ₹4,88,200
If the lender's exit statement requires repayment of the ₹5,00,000 principal, the cash gap is already ₹11,800 before adding the proportionate APR amount. The lender may retain the processing fee only where the applicable rule and upfront KFS disclosure allow it.
This is an arithmetic example, not a lender quote. The actual principal, deductions, tax, proportionate APR and refundable amount must come from your lender's written statement.
After the cooling-off period
Once the cooling-off period ends, a lender may handle your request as prepayment or foreclosure. Foreclosure means paying the full outstanding loan before the scheduled final EMI.
Ask for a dated foreclosure statement. It should help you identify:
- outstanding principal;
- interest up to the proposed payment date;
- foreclosure or cancellation charge, if applicable;
- tax on the charge;
- overdue or bounce amounts, if any;
- the payment route; and
- the statement's validity period.
Compare the statement with your KFS and agreement. If you need help deciding whether early closure is worth the cost, use the personal-loan foreclosure versus part-payment guide.
A written cancellation request checklist
Your request should include only what the lender needs:
- full name and registered contact details;
- application or loan-account number;
- whether funds have reached your bank;
- the date and amount credited, if disbursed;
- a clear request to withdraw, cancel or provide an exit/foreclosure statement;
- a request for the exact payable amount and last payment date;
- a request for written confirmation of closure and mandate cancellation; and
- the official lender channel through which you want the reply.
Do not send an OTP, PIN, CVV, UPI PIN or remote-screen access to close a loan. Do not pay cash to an unofficial intermediary.
What not to do
Do not spend the money while the request is open
Keep the disbursed amount available. Spending it can make a quick exit harder and may force you to borrow again to repay the principal and charges.
Do not stop NACH or EMI instructions first
Stopping a mandate does not cancel the debt. It can create a failed payment while the loan remains open. Wait for the lender's written instruction or closure confirmation.
Do not rely only on a phone promise
Keep an email, in-app message, branch acknowledgement or service-request number. Ask for the final loan status and a no-dues or closure document where applicable.
Do not pay Quick Disburse instead of the lender
Loan repayment and closure payments should follow the lender's authorised route. Quick Disburse facilitates enquiries; it is not the lender and does not receive your loan repayment.
What to check after payment
After you pay the amount stated by the lender, confirm:
- the payment is posted to the correct loan account;
- the outstanding balance is zero or the account is otherwise marked closed as agreed;
- the EMI or NACH mandate is stopped at the correct time;
- you have a receipt and closure or no-dues document; and
- the account information later shown in your credit report is accurate.
Keep the KFS, agreement, request, statement, payment proof and closure confirmation together. If the lender does not resolve a complaint through its grievance process, use the escalation route stated in the KFS or on the lender's official website.
Before accepting another personal loan
If the cancellation happened because the usable amount, EMI or charges were different from what you expected, compare the next offer before accepting it.
Use the personal-loan offer comparison guide to check APR, fees and net disbursal. Read the approval-to-disbursement guide to understand the steps before money reaches your bank. Estimate repayments with the EMI calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel a personal loan after approval?
You can ask the lender to stop the process. Whether the lender can cancel it without a charge depends on whether you accepted the agreement, whether disbursement has started and the lender's current terms. Ask for the status in writing.
Can I cancel a personal loan after the money reaches my account?
Possibly. For a qualifying digital loan, check the KFS for the cooling-off exit. Outside that period or route, the lender may use a foreclosure or other closure process. Request the exact payable amount before sending money.
Is every personal loan covered by the same cooling-off period?
No. The lending channel, lender category, applicable RBI directions and lender policy matter. Use the period stated in your KFS and confirm it with the lender.
Is cancellation free during the cooling-off period?
RBI's digital-lending framework allows exit by paying principal and proportionate APR without a penalty. A reasonable one-time processing fee may still be retained if it was disclosed upfront in the KFS. Your statement should show the actual amount.
Will cancelling a loan remove a credit enquiry?
Not automatically. A valid enquiry already made during the application may remain on your credit report. Cancellation and correction of an inaccurate credit record are different processes.
Should I stop the EMI mandate after asking for cancellation?
Not unless the lender confirms that you should. A cancellation request alone does not close the debt. Keep enough money for any due payment until the account and mandate status are confirmed.
Quick Disburse's role
Quick Disburse is a loan facilitator, not a lender. It can help route a personal-loan enquiry. The lender decides approval, amount, rate, APR, tenure, fees, cancellation, foreclosure, repayment and disbursement. Review the lender's documents before accepting or closing any loan.
